My daughter likes to climb chain link
fences. I let her, but usually say, "Be
careful, Zo."
I say this, mostly, for the benefit of
the people watching me... as an acknowledgment of
yes, I know she's climbing a fence and I support her
exploration. However, I do plead with her to
be careful.
If she falls or scrapes herself I don't say, "See,
I told you to be careful." I hold her, hug her, and
hope she will be more careful next time.

As with past issues of hippohank, I had an idea of
how I wanted this one to turn out before it took off
in its own direction, like my kids. Maybe even a
better direction. As it turns out, hippohank #4 is
about being cautious. Being careful with our hearts,
with our dreams, and our desires.
Leave it to a mom, no?

A refreshing zine from Pine Valley, Hippohank is a mama zine that is a great read for anyone endeavoring to stay creative despite the daily grind. Beth’s struggles with the chaos of motherhood are written about skillfully, and her photo illustrations starring Hank the Hippo are humorous and telling. From Hippohank #1: “Hank is rude.
